YouTube Rewind 2018 is Here and it’s a Disappointing Mess

YouTube Rewind 2018 is Here and it’s a Disappointing Mess

See the full list of YouTube's top trending videos and music videos in Canada below. This time around, online gaming mega-sensation Fortnite provides the backdrop, with content creators dropping into a jungle setting via the game's preferred form of group transit: a school bus hot air balloon.

Sitting around a campfire, the YouTubers highlight channels who discussed mental health and other sensitive topics.

There was unfortunately no place for PewDiePie, who fans had been campaigning to open the video with a clap to correspond with his Meme Review show and simply state "Year Review".

With more than 78,357,371 views, a Canadian family earns the number nine spot on YouTube's Top Trending list for 2018. It was quickly pointed out that while Will Smith kicked off the video and Fortnite was featured, the forces behind the annual recap left out the likes of Shane Dawson, who has amassed more than 19 million followers and whose series' of Jake Paul and Jeffree Star videos easily averaged more than 20 million views each.

If the whole video had been about that, I'd have been okay with it - but I get it, that's not what Rewind is generally about.

Redsox Re-sign Playoff Hero Eovaldi 4-year, $67.5 million
Boston's starting rotation looks to be set after locking-up Eovaldi long-term, but questions remain in the bullpen. It comes as no surprise that Eovaldi is using his strong 2018 campaign to attempt to command a four-year deal.

Fortnite also struck it big in 2018, there's no doubt about that, and of course, YouTube Rewind hangs heavily off of the dick of that trend with the video being nearly 60% Fortnite-themed, from the battle bus to Fortnite Dances. They work with big brands and big celebrities, and they represent the switch to a digital MTV that YouTube is trying to become.

Emerging and well-known YouTube stars also showed up in a big way in the year's "Top Trending Videos" list. The decision came after a backlash over anti-Semitic content. And like last year's video, Youtube Rewind 2018 is already racking up thousands of dislikes. It looks like they aren't the only ones who are disappointed in this year's video.

At time of publication, the video has a staggering 2.2 million dislikes-more than double the 1 million likes it's garnered.

Google Singapore's head of communications, Ms Angeline Leow, said YouTube is a platform for Singaporeans to be entertained and to express themselves.

The YouTube Rewind 2018 hasn't been too popular among viewers.
