Italy nightclub stampede kills six and injures 100

Six people were killed and around 35 injured in a stampede at a night club in Italy's Corinaldo near the coastal city of Ancona on Saturday, reported AFP.

Firefighters said there was panic when it is thought pepper spray may have been fired inside the club in the town of Corinaldo during a concert performance by the Italian rapper, Sfera Ebbasta.

A teenager said he discovered that at least one of the emergency exits was locked when he tried to flee. "Sadly, six people died and dozens are injured", the fire service said in a statement on Twitter.

Ancona Police Chief Oreste Capocasa said the dead teenagers were three girls and two boys.

The ages of the victims have not yet been given.

Some 1,000 people were said to have been inside the Lanterna Azzurra (Blue Lantern) nightclub in the town of Madonna del Piano on the Adriatic coast.

Some reports say there was panic after pepper spray was sacked inside the club in the town of Corinaldo. The Lanterna Azzurra club was packed at the time and numerous injured suffered crushing wounds.

La Repubblica newspaper quoted a survivor as saying that at least one of the exits was blocked. "The bouncers were getting the persons out", one unidentified witness told RAI state radio.

A 16-year-old boy told ANSA that disco patrons were dancing while awaiting the start of the concert when the stampede erupted.

The Italian police have opened an investigation into the cause of the incident.
