Adonis Stevenson’s condition stable but critical after traumatic brain injury: Doctor

Canadian boxer Adonis Stevenson remained in an induced coma in a Quebec City hospital on Monday night, almost 48 hours after being knocked out in his light heavyweight title fight.

A former WBC champion who was boxing's oldest and longest-reigning titleholder before losing to Gvozdyk (16-0, 13 KOs), "Superman" Stevenson (29-2-1, 24 KOs) had reigned for almost 5 ½ years.

The doctor at the Hopital de l'Enfant-Jesus says Stevenson suffered a traumatic brain injury and has been in intensive care since his surgery.

Stevenson was the oldest and longest reigning boxing champion before losing his WBC light-heavyweight title to Gvozdyk. "His situation is still stable under the circumstances, but critical", said Dr Alexis Turgeon, the specialist physician at the Quebec City hospital, during a public update on Stevenson.

Turgeon noted that Stevenson requires "mechanical respiratory assistance, deep sedation and specialized neurological monitoring".

Along with blood and mucus, he brought up a his left bronchial tree - a series of tubes that distribute air to his lungs. Fibrinogen is a type of protein in the blood that works to glue platelets together.

"It's a traumatic brain injury. He was very confused when he arrived, we suspect a concussion", his manager Yvon Michel told a press conference on Saturday night.

A statement from the hospital added: "Mr Stevenson's family thanks supporters for their many messages of empathy and support over the past few days".

Stevenson was making his 10th title defense since winning his belt in 2013 by defeating American Chad Dawson."I talked to the people at the hospital".

Gvozdyk, who won an Olympic bronze medal for Ukraine at the London 2012 Games, claimed the belt in his first shot at a major title.
