Ocasio-Cortez Calls on D.C. to Pay Higher Wages for Staffers

Ocasio-Cortez in a December 2 tweet claimed a $21 trillion mistake could have paid for about 66 percent of the cost of a Medicare-for-all bill. "Gotta love the rich irony of Congressmen asking 'How are you going to pay for it?' suddenly grow quiet when called out on their expectation that part-time workers magically invent money to work for free", she tweeted Monday.

A study previous year by Pay Our Interns found that 51 percent of Republican senators offer paid internships, compared with 31 percent of Democrats. A 2017 study by Washington based advocacy group Pay Our Interns reported that 8% of Republican House representatives pay their interns compared with 3.6% of Democratic representatives.

After hearing this, Ocasio-Cortez declared that she would be providing a "living wage" to all her interns; paying them 15 dollars an hour.

The message may have pressured Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to announce on Monday that he'll pay his interns a stipend in the new congress. Most interns go unpaid in the nation's capital; unsurprisingly, more Republicans now offer paid internships than Democrats.

The same study cited above also found that internships in D.C. cost $6,000 on average.

A recent list of top lawmakers who offer young staffers zero pay includes such progressive heroes like California Sen.

"Sen. Mark Warner's office told FOX Business it is offering paid internships, which are available to certain applicants with "demonstrated financial need", reports the outlet". The same can be said for Vermont Sen.

Soon, Democrats may have one of those send-them-to-Gimbels/send-them-to-Macy's moment on their hands just in time for Christmas. Ted Cruz now do not offer paid internships at the moment. His conclusion: "there's no $21 trillion pot of gold that can be raided to pay for a comprehensive health insurance program, even though the United States really does spend an very bad lot on the military".

She tweeted a link to an article in the Washington Post in which her campaign manager, Saikat Chakrabarti, confirmed that interns in her office would be paid "at least" $15 an hour. "Spokespersons for Sens. Harris and Rubio did not return FOX Business' request for comment".
