MLB’s Jose Castillo, Luis Valbuena Killed In Car Crash

Former Chicago Cubs player Luis Valbuena and former major leaguer José Castillo were killed in a auto accident Friday morning in Venezuela, according to a Venezuelan Winter League team they played for.

The two were teammates for Lara, which played at Caracas on Thursday night.

Valbuena played 11 seasons in the Major League Baseball, including his final two with the Los Angeles Angels, who released him in August.

Univision Sports, citing sources close to the players, reported Valbuena, Castillo and another player, former major leaguer Carlos Rivero, were traveling in Valbuena's vehicle from Caracas' University Stadium to Barquisimento, where Lara is scheduled to play Friday and Saturday. "Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones during this time of grief".

Valbuena, 33, was a Cubs infielder from 2012 to 2014.

Valbuena broke into the major leagues with the Seattle Mariners in 2008. He recorded a.226 batting average with 114 home runs and 367 RBI during his career. He split 2008 between the Giants and Astros, then finished his career by playing three professional seasons in Japan.

He played mostly second base and third base.

He was in the minor leagues in the United States as recently as 2017, playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks' Triple-A Reno affiliate.
