Sick Bouteflika cancels meeting with visiting Saudi crown prince

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin's hearty handshake with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud at the G20 summit in Argentina.

Before the summit, the heir to the throne of the world's top oil exporter had visited the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt and Tunisia.

Now, MBS has one last stop in Jordan before he returns home, amid the murmurs over the handling of Khashoggi killing though.

Al Jazeera's Rob Matheson reports from Amman.

The visit would focus on "partnerships and investment projects", the Algerian presidency said before the prince arrived in Algiers late Sunday on a flight from Mauritania.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's planned meeting with Abdelaziz Bouteflika was canceled on Monday because the Algerian president is sick.

In a statement obtained by AFP, 17 prominent journalists and intellectuals sharply criticised the Saudi leader.

Political parties also expressed opposition to the visit, among them the Movement for the Society of Peace (MSP) opposition party.

Khashoggi's killing has put mounting pressure on Riyadh and MbS, who Turkish officials - and reportedly the Central Intelligence Agency - have concluded was behind the critic's death.

"The world is certain that he ordered a bad crime against the journalist Jamal Khashoggi", they wrote.

Secretary General of the leftist Workers' Party Louisa Hanoun called Prince Mohammed's visit a "provocation".

The visit is also due to boost various bilateral workshops emanating from the 13 meeting Algerian-Saudi Joint Committee held in Riyadh in April, which resulted in the signing of several cooperation agreements. Qatar denies the allegations.
