Central Intelligence Agency chief Haspel to brief Senate on Khashoggi killing

"The intelligence agencies do things, conclude things. but then the elected officials are prevented from knowing about this", Paul said. The White House official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to discuss internal matters publicly.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary James Mattis had told senators last week there was no direct evidence of the crown prince's involvement.

Haspel's exclusion was described as uncommon for that type of briefing, and especially unusual since the Central Intelligence Agency director had been dispatched to Turkey in October to get information about the Turkish investigation into what happened to Khashoggi.

Khashoggi was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, two months ago. He was killed in what US officials have described as an elaborate plot as he visited the consulate for marriage paperwork. Human rights groups say the war is wreaking havoc on the country and subjecting civilians to indiscriminate bombing.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and American resident, was murdered and dismembered minutes after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey on October 2 - allegedly on orders from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

They overwhelmingly approved the resolution, 63-37, on an unexpectedly wide bipartisan vote. Senators have moved to punish Saudi Arabia by advancing legislation to curtail USA backing for the Saudi-led war in Yemen. Following the November 28 briefing, Pompeo and Mattis told reporters there was no direct evidence tying MBS to Khashoggi's murder.

Were there text messages sent back from the killers to the crown prince's office? Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said there are still ongoing negotiations over amendments to the resolution.

Paul said Mattis and Pompeo need to be asked a different, more specific question: "Do you absolutely disagree with the CIA's conclusion?"
