Presented Jeep pickup Gladiator

You can tell when those involved with a project have really put their soul into it. Mark Allen, Jeep's design head, said the Gladiator was a 'bucket list item for me.' Years of visiting the Jeep Mopar Easter Safari has meant fans, owners and the community have come up to him saying they really wanted a new Jeep pickup.

A JeepGladiatorForum user called Jeremi has posted new photos and more detailed specs of the Wrangler-based JT truck.

The Jeep Gladiator rolled onto a stage at the Los Angeles Auto Show Wednesday. The answer is in the details.

Styling wise, the Gladiator gets Jeep's tradition seven-slot grille, but the gaps have been widened compared with Wrangler to allow more cooling for towing. It only comes as a crew-cab 4x4 with a 5-foot bed, but that's by far the most popular midsize configuration. For additional weight savings, the doors, hinges, hood and fenders are made from high-strength aluminum.

The Jeep Gladiator will be available with either of the Wrangler Unlimited's two roof options.

Naturally, all Gladiators feature permanent four-wheel drive, split between two drivetrain systems. It finishes with cupholders and the transmission shifter falling easily to the driver's hand. An 8.4-inch touchscreen is available at the top end.

Speaking of trims, the Gladiator will be offered in just three levels: Sport, Overland, and Rubicon.

For the Rubicon model, the Rock-Trac 4x4 system is used. The rear seat's 38.3-inch leg room is the same as the Wrangler, but its base folds up stadium-style to reveal a pair of storage pockets. But is there perhaps another reason Jeep is using a model name last affixed to a version of the Wagoneer?

It will be offered with either a 3.6-litre V6 petrol or, from 2020, a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, with eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual gearboxes offered. All EcoDiesels will get the eight-speed.

The Sport and Overland models are equipped with Jeep's Command-Trac system, which features a two-speed transfer case with 2.72.1 low-range gear ratio and Dana 44 front and rear axles. All this impressive gearing on the Rubicon trim allows for an impressive 84.2:1 crawl ratio (meaning you can creep very slowly to navigate over extremely tough terrain) combined with more than 11 inches of ground clearance and 30 inches of fording depth for river crossings.

The Rubicon goes one better with a Rock-Trac "4LO" ratio of 4:1, along with locking differentials and electronic anti-sway bar disconnection. While the pickup truck's front suspension is identical to the Wrangler's solid front axle with coil springs, the rear has a five-link coil-spring setup in place of trailing arms, with two upper and two lower forged steel control arms for longitudinal control, and a track bar for lateral control of the axle. Rubicon is the top trim level here, as it is on the Wrangler.

Jeep is back in the pickup game.

The press release touts the Gladiator as having a frame 204-inches long, making it 31-inches longer than the Wrangler JL Unlimited. Under-rim LED lighting and sturdy D-ring tie-downs give the bed area night-and-day functionality.
