Withings Pulse HR fitness tracker boasts big battery life

Withings - having regained the brand from Nokia - has announced a new fitness tracker, the Withings Pulse HR. Withings says Pulse HR will ship in time for Christmas.

The Withings Pulse HR is waterproof to 50m so it's fine for swimming. The new Pulse HR is a minimal fitness tracker with a price tag created to match at $130, roughly $70 less than the Steel HR Sport. The original Withings Pulse came out back in 2013, so the Pulse HR is going to have some major improvements over that model.

While the mechanics sound pretty mundane for a fitness tracker, one of the software features might intrigue health watchers: the Pulse HR cannot only track sleep, but determine when in the user's sleep cycle is best to set off a vibration alarm.

"At Withings, we are dedicated to providing people with premium health and fitness tracking options that they can select from that best suit their personal lifestyles".

It can monitor over 30 activities that range from skiing to boxing, after you've made the manual selection on the screen. The band relies on your phone's Global Positioning System for accurate tracking of running, cycling, walking and hiking.

The Pulse HR comes equipped with OLED display that will normally surface data like your heart rate, step count, total calories burned, and notifications from your phone.

Pulse HR offers a superior battery life of up to 20 days, making it the flawless companion for day to night tracking. It can also track the length and quality of your sleep when worn at night and provide you with analysis and a Sleep Score.

Is the Pulse HR worth buying? The Pulse HR is compatible with Android and iOS devices, and users will have to install the companion app in order to take advantage of the Global Positioning System features. Most of these features require the use of the accompanying Health Mate app, which can connect with a variety of other third-party fitness apps including Google Fit.

Amazon and Withings are offering pre-orders for the Pulse HR at $129.95 with shipments beginning December 5.
