California wildfires: Death toll rises, hundreds missing

The third fire, Northern California's Camp Fire, is the most destructive in the state's history and one of the deadliest.

"Doctor Strange" director Scott Derrickson tweeted that he lost his home in the fire, and Oscar victor Guillermo del Toro tweeted that his memorabilia-stuffed Bleak House might be in danger - he evacuated last night - but that "the gift of life remains".

"I just started weeping", Kelly said.

As of Sunday, containment of Paradise Fire was at just 25 percent.

Spot fires continued to occur late Sunday afternoon near the Malibu campus of Pepperdine University, where 3,500 students were sheltering in place.

Singer Robin Thicke's house has also burned down due to the wildfires now raging through the state.

While posting a picture of a destroyed vehicle and scorched structure on Instagram, Gerard Butler who resides in Malibu said, "Returned to my house after evacuating".

The "Woolsey Fire" swept through hills around Malibu, north of Los Angeles, destroying thousands of homes. "Heartbreaking time across California", Butler said.

The Camp Fire has claimed at least 29 lives since it broke out on Thursday, while at least two people have died in the Woolsey Fire threatening the wealthy beach community of Malibu, near Los Angeles. She previously said her heart was with others facing "this bad disaster".

There were tiny signs of some sense of order returning to Paradise on Monday and also anonymous gestures meant to rally the spirits of firefighters who have worked in an ash-covered wasteland for days.

Resources, including dozens of fire trucks and thousands of firefighters, are pouring in from out of state.

State Sen. Henry Stern, a Democrat from Los Angeles, said fires aren't about politics or jurisdictions.

In the case of the Camp and Woolsey fires, the deadly blazes have been spread by Santa Ana winds - also a naturally-occurring, seasonal phenomenon as air from the interior mountain ranges moves toward the coast.

The Camp Fire in northern California reduced the town of Paradise to rubble and killed at least 23 people, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Brown's theory is that the global use of fossil fuels is making California warmer and drier, and more prone to fires.

Images from Paradise have showed the sky filled with acrid smoke, nearly blotting out the sun.

He posted two videos and could be heard stating: "Welcome to my home in Malibu" in one. There are more than 200 people unaccounted for after a town of around 27,000 was taken over by flames, with fire crews desperately searching for those missing.

The painstaking process of finding the missing and identifying the dead is challenging, with some of the bodies recovered burned beyond recognition.

He has previously blamed Californian officials for wildfires and threatened to withhold federal funding.

Tripp, like so many others, left in a panic.
