Qatar pays Gaza salaries, Israel denies cash is for Hamas

A ministry spokesman said the man, whom he did not name, was shot by Israeli forces during low-level violence east of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at points along the frontier but most kept a distance from the separation barrier, correspondents said.

On Wednesday evening, Gaza's Interior Ministry said in a statement that Egyptian naval vessels had opened fire on a Palestinian fishing boat, killing the 32-year-old Palestinian fisherman.

Mohamed Abed al-Hadi, 27, said he would be collecting 700 shekels ($190 dollars), "quite a sum considering the conditions we're living in", as compensation for an injury in the border clashes.

Hamas's political rival based in the West Bank, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, has slashed Gaza budgets, beggaring tens of thousands of government employees.

Emadi had "smuggled the money" into Gaza in suitcases like a "gangster", the official said.

Before Long is believed to have turned the gun on himself, 12 were killed and 21 were injured in attack. Authorities so far had no indication of a motive, or of any connection to terrorism.

Such a deal harmed Egyptian efforts to reconcile Hamas and the PA and would allow Hamas to consolidate its control over Gaza, Majdalani said.

Most of those victims were reported on May 14, when Israeli forces attacked Palestinian demonstrators who were commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Israeli occupation of the original Palestinian territory.

On Friday, the Israeli army shot dead a Palestinian and wounded 37 other on the border, Gaza medics said.

Israel had previously agreed to the gas-rich Gulf Arab state donating money only for approved civilian construction projects or fuel in Gaza, anxious that more fungible cash donations could reach Hamas, with whom Israel has fought three wars in a decade.

Gaza's fishermen's union responded by suspending all fishing activity in the Gaza Strip on Thursday to protest Abu Odeh's murder.

Recent days have seen progress toward an agreement whereby Gaza's Hamas rulers would stop the clashes in return for an easing of the Israeli blockade on the coastal enclave, which Israel says is necessary to prevent arms smuggling.
