"During an (Israeli) special forces operational activity in the Gaza Strip, an exchange of fire evolved", the army said in a statement.

Palestinian security sources said the clash occurred east of Khan Yunis, where six people were killed and seven wounded, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

A Hamas official said violence erupted when a group of its armed men were fired at from a passing vehicle belonging to Israeli security forces and Hamas members gave chase.

The officer was killed following an exchange of fire that escalated during a Special Forces operation in the Strip, the IDF said, adding that the families had been notified but did not reveal any further details on the identity of the soldiers.

Manelis said the soldiers operating in Gaza overnight "became trapped in a highly complex situation but they had responded "heroically, hit those who threatened them and extracted themselves to Israeli territory".

Netanyahu said the Israeli security establishment supported the move and that ministers in his security cabinet approved it.

In the West Bank, Abbas angrily accused Israel and the US of ganging up behind his back to entrench Hamas' control over Gaza.

Abbas fears that the preparing to float a peace plan, called the "Deal of the Century" by President Donald Trump, which would leave Hamas in control of Gaza and give him only limited autonomy in pieces of the West Bank. He has repeatedly limited financial aid to Gaza in order to pressure Hamas into returning control to him.
