Respect our choices, China's Xi says ahead of Trump G20 meeting

Beijing officials attacked the White House for sending warships and planes close to the islands, which are claimed by China.

Mattis repeated the position that "the United States will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever global law allows".

The representatives of the USA and China agreed on the need to work together toward the "denuclearization" of North Korea, a regional ally of Beijing, but clashed on such subjects as Taiwan and the South China Sea. China expects the United States "to respect China's security interests in the Asia-Pacific, China's sovereignty and development interests", Yang said Friday.

In an attempt to push back on a commonly held view in Beijing, Pompeo tried to offer reassurance that "the United States is not pursuing a cold war or containment policy with China".

Yang said China supports direct dialogue between America and North Korea and hope that the two sides will "accommodate each other's legitimate concerns, build trust and advance denuclearisation process and the establishment of a peace mechanism in tandem". "The US is not trying to contain China but we want fairness and reciprocity".

A planned trip by Mattis to Beijing last month was cancelled amid rising military tensions between the Pacific powers.

In a separate meeting on Thursday in Beijing with former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Wang said the two countries absolutely could resolve their trade dispute.

Top Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi (YAHNG jee-uh-CHERR) is making his government's position clear after the latest round of U.S.

However, Yang and Chinese defense minister Wei Fenghe spoke of the need to improve cooperation, including between the USA and Chinese militaries, to ease the risk of conflict as the two powers jockey for pre-eminence in the Asia-Pacific.

"China is committed to working with the U.S.to achieve a no-confrontational, conflictless, mutually respectful co-operation in which both sides win", added Yang, who heads the ruling Communist Party's foreign affairs commission.

She had been filming aerial shots in her private plane earlier for her Instagram Stories and realized her own home was threatened. Only a day after it began, the fire near the town of Paradise had grown to almost 110 square miles (285 square kilometers).

"China is committed to working with the USA to achieve a non-confrontational, conflict-free, mutually respectful cooperation in which both sides win", it quoted Yang as saying.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis asserted US rights to freedom of navigation but also said the two sides should work together on areas of common interest.

Mattis added his own caution, saying that "competition does not mean hostility, nor does it lead to conflict".

Mattis called the talks "candid" and said that the two militaries looked to improve communication and avoid "miscalculation" at sea. "And let's not forget how our two sides have successfully navigated through previous rough patches in our economic and trade relations", he said.

It may be recalled that President Trump had slapped $250 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese goods, accusing Beijing of nefarious trading practices, prompting retaliatory measures.

Trump and Xi announced the updated negotiation framework previous year and the first meeting in the format was held in June 2017 in Washington, when the two sides discussed issues including North Korea and the South China Sea.

Despite twists and turns, Sino-U.S. relations have generally maintained steady progress over the past four decades, Xi said.

"The United States and the global communities will continue to express our concerns with respect to China's repression of religious groups - Christians, Buddhists, and 800,000 to possibly millions of Muslims - that have been denied their freedoms", Pompeo said during a joint press briefing following Friday's talks.

The Pentagon had previously declined to comment on a May report quoting unnamed sources with direct knowledge of US intelligence reports as saying that the anti-ship cruise missiles and surface-to-air missile systems had been deployed to Fiery Cross Reef, Subi Reef and Mischief Reef in April or early May.

"Foreign countries have no right to interfere", he said.
