Melbourne knife attacker inspired by Islamic State, police say

The message over the loudspeakers says: "This is Victoria Police, please evacuate the area".

A vehicle was set on fire and a number of people were stabbed this afternoon before the knife-wielding man was shot by police.

"There was only two police officers arrived at the time, within seconds of the incident".

The man who has been hailed as a hero for ramming the knife-wielding Bourke Street attacker with a supermarket trolley has described how he acted instinctively. "One of the officers fired his firearm and shot the offender once in the chest".

Officers said the vehicle contained several barbecue gas cylinders.

"They are in a suspected critical condition", paramedics said.

"It looks like he's attempted to ignite a fire in the vehicle, we believe at this stage with a view to igniting those canisters with some sort of explosion, but that didn't eventuate", Commissioner Ashton said. Police stepped up security at the racecourse, and said they would do the same for an A-League soccer match on Saturday night.

He had a minor offending history of drug, theft, and driving offenses, according to the report.

Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Ian McCartney told a media briefing on Saturday it was believed the attack was inspired by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group, though it was thought Shire Ali had no direct links to the organisation.

Police worked through the night and don't believe there are any ongoing threats to the public, he said.

"Three people have been stabbed".

One man, a 74-year-old restaurant worker in Melbourne's CBD who police have not yet named, died at the scene after being stabbed.

One witness said the man was stabbed in the face and desperate efforts were made to save him.

"He was breathing and he was bleeding out".

- An officer shot the attacker who was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital under police guard, where he later died.

Video from the scene showed a man swinging a knife at two police officers near a burning auto before he was shot.

Villasin said bystanders were screaming at police to shoot the knifeman.

Mr Clayton said investigators did not believe there were any other assailants.

On Saturday, the Joint Counter Terrorism Team began executing search warrants on two homes in Werribee and Meadow Heights. "Australians will never be intimidated by these appalling attacks".

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews led the online praise of the officers and the passers-by who "came to the aid of complete strangers".

"To the victims and their loved ones, we offer our prayers, support and deepest sympathies".

"Be proud of who you are, because I know you are and that is what will ensure we will always defeat this insidious evil that comes at us every single time".
