Officials said Long, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, used a legally purchased.45-caliber handgun outfitted with an extended magazine and deployed a smoke device during the attack.

Adler had recently opened a coffee roasting business and was working as a bouncer at Borderline on Wednesday night.

It is believed that the gunman was David Ian Long, a 28-year-old military veteran. He's pictured (right) in a photo supplied by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

He said authorities were obtaining a search warrant for Long's home. However, mental health specialists who were called in "talked to him, and cleared him". Investigators have not commented on whether mental illness played a role in the rampage. "He was totally committed, he gave his all, and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero; he went in to save lives, to save other people". But a mental health specialist who assessed Long after sheriff's deputies responded to a call about his agitated behavior last spring anxious he might be suffering from PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder).

People gathered outside the Rivalry Roasters coffee shop for a vigil for Sean Adler, Thursday, in Simi Valley, Calif. Adler was killed in Wednesday night's shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

On his way to the bar, Helus was talking on the phone with his wife, his last words to her as obtained by the Los Angeles Times were "Hon, I got to go, I love you".

The dead included a sheriff's deputy who tried to enter the bar to help and a man who had survived last year's massacre in Las Vegas, Telemachus Orfanos, 27.

He then began to explain to reporters that Cody was his firstborn son, and bringing his hand to his broken heart, struggling to speak through sobs and deep heaves of emotion, declared, "How much I love him, how much I miss him", saying, "Oh son, I love you so much".

"He was a war veteran and a Marine and in the war and served time and saw some pretty bad things and a lot of people say he had PTSD", said the president, referring to the psychologial condition Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Colell said she wanted to kick Long off the team but the boy's coach urged her to reconsider because that could compromise his goal of joining the Marines.

She could often hear him yelling and cursing, but several months ago, unusually loud banging and shouting prompted her husband to call authorities.

"The fact that he was the first in the door doesn't surprise me at all", sheriff's Sgt. Eric Buschow said Thursday. Gunshots were heard even as officers were responding to the incident.

Police are now investigating Long, a decorated marine who served in Afghanistan, who killed himself after the shooting.

"But I knew it was real so I just pulled him down".

"He was just a great guy, a gentle soul", Buschow said.

The tragedy stunned a community that is annually listed as one of the safest cities in America.

On Thursday, in the wake of the Thousand Oaks shooting, most country singers offered their sympathies and prayers without mentioning anything political - except for a few who have already been outspoken. "We are Thousand Oaks strong".
