CC Sabathia agrees to deal to stay with Yankees

The New York Yankees and CC Sabathia agreed on a one-year, $8 million contract, pending a physical, a source with knowledge of the deal told Yahoo Sports.

Sabathia and NY had reached the agreement Tuesday, subject to a successful physical. The deal does not include any performance bonuses.

Tanaka had a 3.75 ERA in the 2018 regular season. Sabathia pitches with a brace on the knee and needs periodic injections there during the season.

He is 129-80 for the Yankees, and his new deal boosts his pay from NY to $229 million over 11 seasons.

NY finished with a rotation of right-handers Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka and Lance Lynn along with left-handers Sabathia and Happ.

Sabathia took a cut to $10 million this year, agreeing December 16 to a deal that was finalized 10 days later.

In 10 years with the Yankees, Sabathia is 129-80 with a 3.74 ERA and 1.264 WHIP in 1810.2 innings pitched. The team was under the luxury tax in 2018, hovering right below the $197 million threshold with $192.1 million.

Cashman said Luke Voit will head to spring training as the starter at first base, and it will be up to Greg Bird to earn the job back. Voit, acquired from St. Louis on July 28, hit.333 with 14 homers and 33 RBIs in 39 games.

"He's been a great Yankee, and he has time on the clock still", Cashman said.

Both can be optioned to the minors next year.

Sonny Gray is under contract and capable of starting, but he isn't in the Yankees' plans.

Sabathia has been with the Yankees since 2009.

"I love it here obviously", Sabathia said. So I will reallocate his abilities to some other club for a yet-to-be determined price tag, and he will be good again. "I think he'd like to stay and we'd like to keep him but it's a free market and that complicates things at times".
