Vehicle smashes into Melbourne's Bourke Street Mall and bursts into flames

Several people were stabbed in the Australian city of Melbourne on Friday (Nov 9) and a man was arrested after an incident in the centre of the city crowded with pedestrians and shoppers.

Police have shot a knife-wielding man after three people were stabbed in Melbourne's Bourke Street.

The man was arrested and taken to hospital in a critical condition, police said.

No terrorist link has been made at this stage of the investigation, according to police.

Victoria Police said a bomb response unit had been called to the area and was now making the scene safe.

One person was believed to be in a critical condition in hospital suffering a neck injury, a statement from Ambulance Victoria said.

The condition of the other two is not known. "A third person has also been taken to hospital". One of the victims later succumbed to the injuries, while two others are still receiving treatment.

Others worth a mention in the current list are West Coast 9/1, Hofburg 14/1 and the hugely popular Accelerate, also trading 14/1. Mubtaahij made up the places but the victor was never in trouble, delighting followers who had him backed at a stunning 8/1.

The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.

"The bomb response unit have cordoned off the area, the MFB have extinguished the vehicle fire, the bomb response unit is now making the scene safe", Superintendent David Clayton told reporters.

Police shot the man in the chest after he charged at them with the knife.

There were large spots of what appears to be blood near the figure, as were a pair of men's black lace-up shoes.

Counter-terrorism police have been notified, and they are investigating, although there is no immediate indication the incident is terror related.

SBS News has contacted Victoria Police for comment. "People were running", he said.

"Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is asked to go to Melbourne West Police Station to make a statement", a police statement said.
