Patients Rescued From Burning Hospital In Butte County

"We're doing everything we can to get people out of the affected areas".

An Associated Press photographer saw dozens businesses and homes leveled or in flames, including a liquor store and gas station. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said some people at the hospital were trapped in a tunnel. He was wrong. It was the flush of the Camp Fire around the town that made him panic: "I was waving down people just anyone on the road just help me because i didn't have a auto or nothing".

The Redding Record-Searchlight reports that the evacuations have resulted in gridlock traffic on Skyway, the main route connecting Paradise and Chico, as people attempt to flee the area.

The blaze erupted as windy weather swept the state, creating extreme fire danger.

The blaze, known as the Camp Fire, is moving at an estimated 80 acres per minute.

Earlier, the campus at California State University, Channel Islands, had been evacuated because of poor air quality.

Flames consume a building as the Camp Fire tears through Paradise, California. He "knocked on doors, yelled and screamed" to alert as many residents as possible, Bernacett said.

'My husband tried his best to get everybody out. The whole hill's on fire. She said she did not know the exact number of people evacuated.

Groups of fleeing residents gathered in a Kmart parking lot in Paradise, with their dogs and some with horses, waiting to be evacuated, said Shelley Freeman who spoke to a relative and friends in Paradise.

Cal Fire spokesman Scott McClean said the fire is burning toward the city of Chico but he's "not necessarily" concerned the fire will breach the city limits. Multiple motorists have abandoned their vehicles.

"We're getting them on other vehicles with room".

Cal Fire tweeted that the fire was "very dangerous" and urged people to follow evacuation orders. "The message I want to get out is if you can evacuate, you need to evacuate", Honea said. Within six hours, it had grown to more than 26 square miles (69 square kilometers), Gaddie said.

Video footage taken by ABC Redding affiliate KRCR showed the hospital surrounded by thick smoke as the fire illuminated the darkened sky in the background.

Cal Fire said Wednesday that a Red Flag Warning was issued for most of Northern California's interior as well as parts of Southern California through Friday morning. "Everything is a very receptive fuel bed".

The Adventist Health Feather River Hospital in Paradise evacuated all its patients and staff, given its close proximity to the fire, and transported them safely to hospitals in neighboring towns, said Jill Kinney, an Adventist Health spokeswoman.

The strong winds seen in the Bay Area also pose a danger by enabling the spread of fire, according to May.
