On Wednesday night, in Thousand Oaks, California, as gunman Ian Long killed 12 people at the Borderline Bar and Grill, Orfanos was not so fortunate. He told a news conference Long had likely shot himself and that he was a veteran who had served in the U.S. Marine Corps. I saw him, then I saw him fire his weapon one more time. "Oh, son, I love you so much".

Borderline Bar and Grill in California had become a safe haven for dozens of survivors of last year's massacre at a Las Vegas country music festival, a place where they gathered for line dancing and drinks.

Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus and a passing highway patrolman arrived around 11:20 response to several 911 calls, heard gunfire and went inside, the sheriff said. Helus was one of the first responders at the scene, three minutes later, Dean said. "We have no idea what the motive was at this point", Dean said.

The Marine Corps said Long had attained the rank of corporal after serving almost five years, including seven months in Afghanistan.

"I've learned it doesn't matter what community you're in", Dean told reporters when asked if he was surprised this happened in Thousand Oaks.

The sheriff said a mental health crisis team was called at that time and concluded that Long did not need to be taken into custody.

Dean said he believed about 150 to 200 people were inside the bar at the time of the shooting. "There was an exit right next to me, so I went through that". "He looked like he knew what he was doing".

Helus was not only a 29-year sheriff veteran, but he was also a husband and father. Both were working when the shooter began firing on patrons, Laura Meek said. That Sheriff's Sergeant died in the hospital.
