Gunman and 12 others dead in California bar shooting

Ventura County Sheriff's Deputies responded to reports of shots fired at Borderline Bar and Grill, located at 99 Rolling Oaks Drive, around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday.

The procession will start at Los Robles Hospital and end at the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office.

A sheriff says 13 people are dead, including a sheriff's sergeant and the gunman, after a shooting inside a crowded Southern California bar late Wednesday. He died at a hospital early Thursday.

While most of the victims are yet to be identified, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean revealed one of the victims was a 29-year veteran of the force, Sgt. Ron Helus.

"I've been a cop for 41 years and I never thought I've seen the things around the country would happen but I've learned it doesn't matter what community you're in, it doesn't matter how safe your community is, it can happen anywhere", said Sheriff Dean.

"He loved spending time with his son", Buschow added.

He said he heard from people inside that they were hiding in toilets and the attic of the bar.

People reportedly escaped the bar by using chairs to break windows, while others reportedly sheltered inside the venue's toilets. Wednesday night was college night at Borderline, with the restaurant filled with young people, including some from nearby California Lutheran University and from Pepperdine University in Malibu.

He said he has no doubt Helus' tactics at the scene "were sound when he went in". "You know, I think it's going to be something that we're going to have to come together and move past".

Officers were called to Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, near Los Angeles, at around 11.20pm local time.

The bar is also close to several other universities, including California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, Pepperdine University in Malibu and Moorpark College in Moorpark. Then he said he saw the gunman, wearing a small black head covering and black hoodie. He said she told him the shooter threw tear gas into the bar and then she heard gunshots and ran out the back. "Those are my people and it's just not fair, it's not fair", she said.

"I tried to get as many people to cover as I could", Knapp said.

Kuredjian and others described Thousand Oaks as a usually placid place.

"It was really, really, really shocking", she told KABC-TV.

People hugged after praying before the procession carrying the body of Ventura County Sheriffs Sgt. Ron Helus.
