Fly Jamaica flight to Toronto crash lands at airport in Guyana

A plane carrying dozens of Canadians flirted with disaster this morning.

The aircraft, a Boeing 757-200 according Flightradar 24, was bound for Canada when it suffered a hydraulic issue after take-off, AFP reported, citing Guyana's infrastructure minister, David Patterson.

The flight reportedly left Guyana at 2:10 am local time today and at 2:21 am, the pilot indicated an hydraulic problem, requesting permission to return.

Images posted on the airport's Facebook page and various sites showed the plane appearing to have gone through a chain link fence, with one of its engines tilted upward and resting on the fencing. The activated emergency chute can be seen at right along with the shattered right wing.

Officials say a Fly Jamaica Boeing 757-200 aircraft has overshot the runway at Guyana's main worldwide airport, injuring several people.

According to a report on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) website, Rabina Roopnarine got a call from her mother, Bebe Ali, who was among those on the plane.

Ali, CBC said, used a flight attendant's cellphone to contact her daughter from the hospital shortly after the crash landing. "There were no reports of broken bones", Patterson told a news briefing at the airport.

"She just wants to come home", Roopnarine said.

Patterson said that the United States' National Transportation Safety Board has been informed.

The plane touched down at 2.53am, when it overshot the runway. There were some serious injuries but no fatalities.

In the meantime, Fly Jamaica is tasked with taking care of its passengers. It is headquartered in Jamaica.
