The company also announced a standalone version of the Comrades multiplayer game would be made available, while a collaboration with online game Final Fantasy XIV - called "Adventurer from Another World" was also slated to occur. While director Hajime Tabata has also left developer Square Enix.

Having invested so much time and so many resources into Final Fantasy XV, Square Enix was planning to keep fans engaged and spending with four more DLC packs. However, no further details were divulged on what this new title is.

Episode Ardyn producer Yuji Shinoda did add that while the other three episodes of the second season won't come as DLC, "we still hope to deliver something that showcases what type of story we were aiming to deliver in some way, shape, or form".

The reason behind the move seems most likely to be related to Square Enix's poor earnings report, which saw it publishing a loss of a massive $33 million. And due to this directional change, the company has chose to focus our resources on the development of this AAA title.

The new DLCs were being developed by Luminous Productions, game director Tabata's new studio within the company.

It's not clear what this news means for other Final Fantasy related projects, like the remake of Final Fantasy VII, which is one of Square's most long-requested remasterings.

Tabata, meanwhile, revealed his decision to leave Square Enix was motivated by a desire to work on a brand-new project of his own.

"In regards to my next endeavors and near future, I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after FFXV".

Regarding the "extraordinary loss" mentioned above, details of which emerged immediately before the Final Fantasy XV livestream aired, Square Enix explained that this too was due to the sudden change in direction at Luminous Productions.
