City of Malibu ordered to evacuate as flames jump Hwy 101

Thousands of people have been forced out of their homes in Ventura County, about 30 miles from Malibu.

Around 10,000 acres of land was torched in the blaze by Thursday night, fire officials said.

Unfortunately, Scott Derrickson, best known for directing Doctor Strange, announced on Twitter early this morning that his home has been lost in the fire.

Mandatory evacuations have been issued for the Point Mugu Naval Base, Camarillo Springs, Vallecito Trailer Park, California State University Channel Islands, Dos Vientos (All areas outlined on map below) and the South Coast (all areas outlined on map below).

In addition to directing Doctor Strange, Derrickson has also taken the reigns on multiple horror films, including The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister.

In Southern California, strong Santa Ana winds were fanning two fires, including the Woolsey Fire, which by Friday morning had burned across USA 101 and was heading in the direction of Malibu.

CAL Fire reports they are assisting with a wildfire that has broken out in Ventura County.

Meanwhile, the intensifying Woolsey Fire in Oak Park, northwest of Los Angeles, quadrupled in size in just hours, reports CBS News' John Blackstone.

About 1,000 structures have been reportedly destroyed, majority in Paradise, a town of about 26,000 people that has been virtually wiped out by the exploding blaze, reports and photos show.

A strike team of five fire engines and a battalion chief was sent at about 4 p.m., said Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jack Crabtree.

At least 30 homes have been destroyed.

Both fires erupted Thursday afternoon and have grown rapidly. "Pretty much the community of Paradise is destroyed, it's that kind of devastation", he said.

Evacuation notices were announced for Chico, which is home to around 93,000 people and is about 90 miles north of Sacramento.

Dettorre is concerned that as the fire crosses the freeway "it will make its historic and typical run all the way down Pacific Coast Highway".

To the west in Ventura County, Moorpark College is closed due to the impacts of fire and Wednesday night's deadly mass shooting in nearby Thousand Oaks.

"While a lot of my yard and neighbors' yards burned, the firefighters saved our homes", Janic tweeted just after 2 a.m. (5 a.m. ET) Friday.

Voluntary evacuations have been added in Ventura County for Lake Sherwood and the area south of Hwy 101 and north of Potrero Road between Westlake Boulevard and Wendy Drive in Thousand Oaks.

Ventura County Fire officials say there are 20 to 25 an hour winds. No roadways were closed as of Friday.
