5 reasons why conservatives can support acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker

During a brief stint a year ago as a conservative legal commentator on CNN, Whitaker often appeared as a Trump defender, saying he saw no evidence the president colluded with Russians during the 2016 campaign or obstructed justice.

Mr Trump had repeatedly assailed him publicly for not taking a tougher approach to illegal immigrants, and accused him of protecting Robert Mueller's investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russians - an investigation that is also examining whether the president himself obstructed justice.

"It's a disgrace, it should never have been started because there was no crime", Mr. Trump told reporters Wednesday before former Attorney General Jeff Sessions' departure was announced.

Asked whether Whitaker would assume control over Mueller's investigation, Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Flores said Whitaker would be "in charge of all matters under the purview of the Department of Justice".

"It seems like every time we get ahead, Trump breaks another rule", Ferdinandt said.

Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler, who is in line to become chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in January, said it is "wholly inappropriate" for Whitaker to take over the Mueller probe and that Rosenstein should continue overseeing it.

"But I think most importantly, from the president's perspective, he's loyal", Cook said.

On Thursday, the Acosta incident entered even more freaky territory when the White House was accused of tweeting a video doctored to make the reporter appear more aggressive in fending off the female press aide who tried to remove his mic. It's a job he knows well given that Whitaker has spent the previous year as Sessions' chief of staff.

Sessions took himself out of decision-making on the probe in March 2017 even after Trump dispatched the White House lawyer to persuade him not to do so, according to a person familiar with the matter. As acting attorney general, he will be well positioned to rein in the special counsel.

Rosenstein no longer will oversee the special counsel investigation.

Spats between Trump and journalists can sometimes seem circus-like, but critics say the president's hot temper illustrates his deeper disdain for Washington norms - and allegedly for the law.

With control of the lower house of Congress, the Democrats have the power to order their own investigation into Trump's dealings with the Russians and other foreign governments.

Any action by Whitaker could potentially be challenged under the Vacancies Reform Act Trump used to appoint his acting attorney general.

CNN reports that Christie is not believed to have met with the president Thursday.

How many people will show up remains to be seen. The president has verbally dismissed the Mueller probe, calling it a "witch-hunt" into his legitimacy in the White House.
