LGBT, Muslim and Women Candidates Make History in the 2018 Midterms

Democrats Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI won their respective races and will represent their districts in the House of Representatives.

The House is getting its first two Muslim women and MA is getting its first black congresswoman while Arizona and Tennessee stand to elect their first woman senators in Tuesday's midterm elections. She will succeed the first Muslim congressman, Keith Ellison, who vacated the seat to run in Minnesota's attorney general race.

Her win goes into records, making her the second Muslim woman ever elected to the US Congress.

She is expected to share the honour with Somali-American Ilhan Omar, who was leading the opinion polls in Minnesota.

Fresh off of becoming the first Somali-American elected to Congress, Ilhan Omar said Wednesday that she's still enjoying being known for her firsts. The 36-year-old moved to America at the age of 12 as a refugee from Somalia. She spent four years of her childhood in a refugee camp in Kenya.

In an interview with Elle magazine in September this year, Ms Omar opened up about her Somalia background and shared what it was like to arrive in the USA for the first time as a child of 10.

Three Duke players scored at least 22 points while freshman Keldon Johnson tallied 23 points for Kentucky in the losing effort. Barrett had a game-high 33 points in 32 minutes on 13-of-26 shooting from the field, including a 3-of-7 mark from downtown.

"The kind of opportunity that came from the resistance to this very bad person in the White House and Republicans kind of adopting that message, that being a strong man kind of sustained them, allowed for us to say there is a kind of politics that's about hope, about joy, about optimism, about inclusion", she said.

"I stand here before you tonight as your congresswoman-elect".

Also elected for the first time in MA was a black Congresswoman.

Ilhan's father, Nur Omar Mohamed, is a teacher trainer.

Democrats took control of the lower house of Congress, but the USA president escaped a feared "blue wave" as his Republicans bolstered their Senate majority. "Yes, we marched outside the Capitol, but now we get to march into the Capitol", she wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

Rashida Tlaib is the Detroit-born daughter of Palestinian immigrants -the eldest of 14 children.
