Kansas Basketball: Biggest takeaways from win over Michigan State

Kansas shot under 20 percent from the field and scored 12 second half points. That's the Kentucky Wildcats.

The 118 points by Duke were the most an opponent has ever scored against Kentucky under John Calipari and it was the team's worst loss since he took over the program in 2009-10. Still, you can bet coach Mike Krzyzewski will try to fix his team's flaws and make Duke an even more hard matchup.

Every single game that the Blue Devils play this season, they are going to have the two-best players on the floor, if not the three-best. He was a terror in transition, he was unstoppable when he turned the corner and he oh-by-the-way hit 3-of-7 threes.

In what will go down as Tom Keegan's final KU Sports Extra at the Journal-World, we broke down the game and reacted to some of the things that went down during KU's season opener on Tuesday night.

The same can be said about Williamson, although that wasn't necessarily a given entering the season.

After 40 minutes of basketball, however, there wasn't much in the way of competition, as Zion Williamson, R.J. Barrett, Cameron Reddish and the Blue Devils absolutely throttled the Wildcats in front of a national audience. But there were legitimate questions about how well that would translate to the college level, where player are closer to his size, and his strength, and his athleticism. "I shouldn't say I'm surprised at how well these guys played because I see them, but to play on this stage right away against Kentucky was a little bit surprising".

Three Duke players scored at least 22 points while freshman Keldon Johnson tallied 23 points for Kentucky in the losing effort.

You can't guard him, either, as evidenced by the 28 points he posted on 11-for-13 shooting. "We have a big target on us, and every environment we go to is going to be like that, so just to get used to it". That did not go well.

In January and February, there can be a tendency for top freshmen to look ahead.

"I gotta give them credit", Calipari said of the Blue Devils.

A top 15 recruit in his own right, Jones could not be a more flawless point guard for this Duke team. Barrett had a game-high 33 points in 32 minutes on 13-of-26 shooting from the field, including a 3-of-7 mark from downtown. They beat Arizona in 2001 and MI in 1992.

Just like I didn't know how Kentucky's 2014-15 team would get beaten. Also, the 118 points are the most by the Blue Devils against a team from a major conference since a 120-84 home win over UCLA in 1998.

We could see that coming then.
