Gareth Southgate defended the decision to honour Wayne Rooney by fielding England's top worldwide goalscorer in a friendly against the United States of America at Wembley next week.

Rooney is to come out of global retirement to make his 120th and final England appearance against the United States at Wembley on November 15.

England's decision to recall Wayne Rooney for a friendly clash with the United States has sparked a "circus", says Harry Redknapp, but he is not the first player to be handed an undeserved cap. We haven't decided on that at this time, so he wouldn't wear No. 10 because he won't start the game.

Fletcher has said that it became clear quite early that Rooney would go on to become a United great, with the only fear being that the likes of Madrid would attempt to take him from the English giants. "I guess that will depend on the circumstances of the game and the players that are out there, but I have no issue with that at all".

The FA and Gareth Southgate have chosen to honour Rooney - the country's leading goalscorer - with a cameo appearance at Wembley in the upcoming global friendly.

Injuries and the fitness of other players may determine whether or not Southgate hands a shock call up to 18-year-old Nelson, who has been impressing in the Bundesliga.

"Would I give him armband?"

"Wayne Rooney finished with England, Gareth Southgate moved on and I don't agree with this at all".

"I understand that's caused a lot of debate and conjecture but for me it's a small way of appreciating what he's given to the country". "We'll see in a few years how close I am".

Southgate revealed he wants to "protect" his core squad as much as possible in the friendly against the USA before they play Croatia in the UEFA Nations League - a competition the England manager insists he takes seriously.

England are sweating over the fitness of Liverpool central defender Joe Gomez ahead of the upcoming worldwide break.

"I hope for him that he gets the appropriate response because I think he deserves that", said Southgate.
