Freak injury results in first career defeat for Belfast's Ryan Burnett

Freak injury results in first career defeat for Belfast's Ryan Burnett

Donaire will take on WBO champion Zolani Tete in the semi-finals in early 2019.

IT WAS a successful return for five-division world champion Nonito "Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr. after scoring a freaky fourth-round victory to dethrone British World Boxing Association (WBA) super world bantamweight champion Ryan Burnett and win the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Diamond bantamweight title in the World Boxing Super Series quarterfinals in Glasgow, Scotland, yesterday. "I've got to give it to Burnett".

When throwing a right hook, Burnett suffered a debilitating back injury which caused the fight to be called off shortly after - giving Donaire the win in very unfortunate circumstances.

"I think I'm back to being the devastating guy, I've always been devastating even at 126, they fear my power".

Burnett was able to survive the round, but was unable to continue due to a freak hip injury.

Before the fight donair for the first time in seven years, made the limit of the lightest weight, but in this game, Burnett was inferior to him in size is not too noticeable.

Despite not having performed at 118 pounds since 2011, a span of 15 fights, and having to come down two full weight classes from his previous bout (an April 21 loss to Carl Frampton as a featherweight), Donaire still showed his trademark speed and quickness against the 26-year-old Burnett.

"I see him getting rid of Donaire in the middle to late rounds", he said.

The card culminated with undefeated junior welterweights Josh Taylor and Ryan Martin in another series quarterfinal.

Taylor comes from Scotland and will have the hometown advantage going into the fight. Taylor will face Ivan Baranchyk (19-0, 12 KO's) in the semifinals.
