In a statement on Thursday (Nov 1), Subaru agent Motor Image said the move is a precaution against the possibility that under stress, valve springs in affected engines may fracture.

The other affected models in Japan were the Forester sport utility vehicle, the BRZ sports auto and the 86 sports coupe, which is manufactured by Subaru for Toyota Motor Corp. This also affects the Scion FR-S, a BRZ clone sold by Toyota's now-defunct Scion brand. Most of the vehicles were manufactured between January 17, 2012, through June 6, 2013 and all powered by the FB20 2.0-liter Boxer naturally aspirated engine. Toyota said it would contact affected USA owners by mail starting in December.
