Apple's Mac mini gains a massive performance boost

Its accompanying stylus, the Apple Pencil, was also given significant upgrades: aside from new gestures and controls, it can now magnetically latch onto the side of the iPad Pro and charge wirelessly. And now, at long, long, last, Apple has held its "There's More in the Making" event in Brooklyn New York, it's finally here...

He kicked off the event by unveiling the new MacBook Air. Interestingly, the Mac Mini still remains one of the few branded mini desktop computer systems that's completely developed by a single company.

Prior to today, the Mac mini had not seen a major refresh since 2014, meaning its internals were starting to show their age.

When the video of the MacBook Air played on stage there were "whoo-hoos" from the crowd when the retina display was featured, and more when the three different color options came on screen: gold, silver, and space gray. The new mini is also quieter rated at 4dBA when idle as compared to 12dBA for the older version and made from 100% recycled aluminum. Orders open today, shipping November 7th.

Can new colors like gold help Apple sell more Apple Watches and computers? Future earnings reports will be the proof, but for now, Apple is heading into one of its trickiest holiday seasons yet. Apple has also baked in its T2 Security Chip which enables on-the-fly data encryption and ensures that software loaded during the boot process hasn't been compromised. The 2018 Mac Mini is much more than that though. Altogether these advancements help to reduce the carbon footprint of the new Mac mini by almost 50%.

The new computer can be spec'ed with either a quad-core or hexa-core Intel 8th Gen processor and up to 64GB of RAM and 2TB of storage. The more affordable option features an unspecified 8th-generation quad-core 3.6GHz Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM (2666MHz), Intel UHD Graphics 630, and a 128GB PCIe-based SSD storage. According to Angela Ahrendts, head of retail, the sessions will include video and music editing, photo labs for kids, and special photo, video and music labs for teachers.

When Steve Jobs introduced the very first Mac mini at Macworld 2005, he told us it was built to meet demand for a "stripped-down Mac that is more affordable". With capacities up to 2TB, the SSDs on Mac mini is up to four times faster, so working with large files and opening apps are quicker than ever.
