Stephen Hawking's wheelchair, thesis for sale

Estimated prices range from £100 ($130) for a limited-edition print of Stephen Hawking's Time Travellers Invitation to £150,000 ($195,360) for a photocopy typescript of his PhD thesis (signed and inscribed) from 1965. Shortly after it went live, requests to view the research crashed the website, with nearly 60,000 downloads in less than 24 hours.

"He was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) just as he arrived in Cambridge to begin his Ph.D. studies", Venning said.

Finally, Hawking's best joke is also up for grabs: his famous "Reception for Time Travelers" invitation, which yielded no attendees thanks to its sensibly well-timed release after the event had already passed. He was able to move only a few fingers on one hand and was completely dependent on others or on technology for virtually everything - bathing, dressing, eating, even speech.

It is one of five known copies of his thesis, the auction house said, and has a pre-sale estimate between $126,000 and $189,000.

The wheelchair that will be auctioned is a red and maroon leather equipment which was used by Hawking between the late-1980s and mid-1990s.

The motorized wheelchair that carried Hawking out of the 1980s and into his most high-profile period also is on the auction block, with Christie's reportedly expecting it to fetch between $13,000 and $20,000.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Stephen Hawking Foundation and the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Christie's said.

Jenna Bush Hager concurred with a simple, "Me too". "What is racist?" Kelly asked about dressing up as a race you are not. Below is but a brief sampling of the chorus of sarcastic responses that resonated across the Twittersphere.

Alongside the wheelchair, the auction will include several Hawking-owned objects, including his medals and awards, his bomber jacket and countless of his original works.

Stephen Hawking was a cosmic visionary, a figure of inspiration and a global celebrity.

Professor Stephen Hawking has thirteen honorary degrees. This particular episode was aired on September 26, 2010.

The auction will also feature a script from one of Hawking's appearances on "The Simpsons" and other scientific papers he published.

Autograph manuscript, notes and extracts from the "Turba philosophorum",[Cambridge, 1670s].

"We are very pleased to have the assistance of Christie's to help us with the important matter of managing our beloved father's archives and his unique and precious collection of personal and professional belongings, chronicling his life and work", said Lucy Hawking in a statement via Christie's.
