‘Life-Threatening’ Hurricane Willa Barrels Into Mexico’s Western Coast

Speaking by telephone, Jose Garcia, another resident of the hardest-hit area, said he had hunkered down with others in an Escuinapa hotel waiting for the storm to pass, listening to it rattle buildings as it drove onwards.

As far as the nor'easter being a Halloween trick from the cosmos, Kines couldn't really comment - but he said one thing is for sure: "It's certainly not a treat".

Forecasters said Willa would blow ashore somewhere along a 140-mile (220-kilometer) stretch from Mazatlan to San Blas.

Although Willa weakened from a Category 5 to a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale Tuesday morning, the US National Hurricane Center still warned residents that the hurricane will bring a unsafe storm surge, wind and rain to western Mexico.

Halloween weekend will bring more than just ghosts and goblins - a nor'easter is creeping across the U.S. and is expected to drench the Northeast with wet snow, rain and other scary conditions.

While Willa remains a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, "little change in strength is expected before Willa reaches the coast of Mexico".

The flood risk was compounded by rains caused by Vicente, a storm that dissipated early on Tuesday, having drenched parts of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan and Guerrero states.

It was due to weaken fast as it moved inland, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Willa is slated to produce total rainfall accumulations of 6 to 12 inches and may produce local amounts to 18 inches, the NHC said, adding that landslides and flash flooding are likely.

Bob Swanson, who is from Saskatchewan, Canada, and spends two to six months of the year in his house in the Cerritos neighborhood near the shore in Mazatlan, said he filled up his washing machine with water, filled his home fuel tank and gassed up his auto in he needs to head into the mountains for safety.

Farther to the south, the remnants of Tropical Storm Vicente continued to bring heavy rain that caused risky flooding in southern and southwestern Mexico.

Near the coast, the surge will be joined by large and destructive waves.

Hurricane-force winds extended 35 miles (55 kilometers) from the storm's core, and tropical storm-force winds were up to 125 miles (205 kilometers) out.

Farther south, meanwhile, Mexican officials reported 12 deaths related to heavy rains from Tropical Storm Vicente.
