Universal's reboot of the venerable horror franchise is on track to sell an estimated $77.5 million in tickets at 3,928 theaters in the US and Canada from Friday through Sunday, winning the weekend and scoring the second-highest October opening ever, behind Venom's $80.3 million earlier this month. "Halloween" cost just $10 million, marking another win for Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, who co-financed the film with Miramax. Directed by longtime fan of the 1978 original, David Gordon Green, and written by Danny McBride, along with music by Michael Myers' creator John Carpenter, this latest installment aims to create a true sequel to the original classic, retroactively placing all the other Halloween sequels right in the circular file. "'Halloween' brings the franchise back to life in a fresh, relevant and fun way that is winning over fans and critics alike". "Halloween" saw the biggest opening in Mexico, where it made $4.9 million from 845 locations. Carpenter served as an executive producer and composed the score with his son, Cody Carpenter, and godson, Daniel Davies. It picked up a solid $7.5 million, taking its total earnings to $10.5 million.

"A Star Is Born" continues to do monster business of its own. After "Venom's" two-week reign atop domestic box office charts, Sunday estimates show Sony's superhero movie led by Tom Hardy was narrowly defeated by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "A Star Is Born" for second place.

The top 5 is rounded out by the family-friendly spooky sequel Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween in fourth place with $9.7 million and First Man in fifth with $8.5 million. "First Man" has earned $55 million globally, including $25.5 million overseas.

In limited release, Jonah Hill's directorial debut, Mid90s, is arriving in four theaters with an estimated $249,500, which works out to a robust per-screen average of $62,375. The 2018 box office remains up 10.6 percent compared to the previous year.
