Ford: 350 More GT Supercars on the Way

Hermann Salenbauch, Ford Performance vehicle line director, dismisses concerns that collectors will balk that their limited-edition auto is now not quite so limited: "It will not take down from the exclusivity of this auto", he says.

The automaker has announced plans to extend production of its $450,000 GT supercar by two years due to "exceptional demand", as it claims to be getting seven orders for every vehicle it can make.

The added production may indeed make new dreams come true for buyers, but only for a select few.

The application process is one of the most controversial aspects of the new GT.

The market's thirst for the 216 miles per hour coupe was revealed in recent months when two made their way to auction blocks - despite their original owners signing agreements not to sell them during the first two years of ownership - and were sold for between $1.3 million and $1.8 million each. Salenbauch says that building the carbon-fiber GT is very complicated, hence the low production volumes.

The production run will end in 2022 now, instead of 2020. However, only 138 were actually completed through the first year.

Ford announced Thursday that it will extend production of its halo supercar, the GT, to six model years and 1,350 total units.

"The response to our Ford GT has been unprecedented, with initial demand outstripping supply by more than six-to-one", said Hermann Salenbauch, Ford Performance director.

Ford is re-opening the application window to customers hoping to join the exclusive group of Ford GT owners starting November 8 for select global markets.

Successful applicants will work with the Ford GT Concierge Service for a personalized purchase experience of cars produced in the 2020 to 2022 calendar years.

The Ford GT makes 647 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged EcoBoost 3.5-litre V6 and can hit 100 km/h from zero in 4.0 seconds, moving on to a top speed of 348 km/h.
