U.S. Must ‘Push Harder for the Truth’ About Journalist Jamal Khashoggi

U.S. Must ‘Push Harder for the Truth’ About Journalist Jamal Khashoggi

But the worldwide revulsion at the reported assassination and mutilation of a single newspaper columnist - Khashoggi, who wrote for The Washington Post - has already sullied that image far more than previous missteps by Mohammed bin Salman, from miring his country in a catastrophic war in Yemen to kidnapping the prime minister of Lebanon.

Pompeo met first with King Salman, then twice with the crown prince.

A second source said the officer assembled and sent his own team to interrogate Khashoggi.

Soylu said: "As soon as (Saudi Arabia) gives the consent, steps will be taken toward investigating". Earlier on Monday, The New York Times and CNN, quoting unnamed sources, reported that Saudi Arabia would acknowledge Khashoggi's death was "the result of an interrogation that went wrong".

Saudi Arabia has dismissed accusations that Jamal Khashoggi was ordered murdered by a hit squad inside its Istanbul consulate as 'lies and baseless allegations, ' as Riyadh and Ankara spar over the missing journalist's fate. Turkish officials fear he was killed and dismembered.

Pompeo was heading next to Turkey, where officials have accused the Saudis of using a 15-member team to kill Khashoggi inside the consulate.

Maas said the trip, which had been intended as part of a push to fix strained relations with the desert kingdom, made no sense in the context of concerns over the fate of Khashoggi, whom Turkish authorities believe was murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Some members of the 15 Saudi suspects that travelled to the country's Istanbul consulate are close with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

According to the newspaper, one of the men has been photographed accompanying the royal on his foreign visits.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told the state-run Anadolu Agency on Wednesday that Saudi Arabia has "accepted" a request for a search of the official residence but had not yet given its final consent.

A high-level Turkish official told The Associated Press that police found evidence there of Khashoggi's slaying, without elaborating.

Khashoggi, a Saudi citizen who was also a resident of the United States, has been a contributor to The Washington Post and a critic of Saudi leaders, especially Crown Prince Mohammed.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters the investigation "was looking into many things such as toxic materials and those materials being removed by painting them over".

Turkey had wanted to search the consulate for days. CCTV footage showed vehicles moving from the consulate building to the nearby Saudi consul general's residence on October 2.

The official did not say when the search of the consul's home would take place.

"The effort behind the scenes is focused on avoiding a diplomatic crisis between the two countries", said Ayham Kamel, the head of the Eurasia Group's Mideast and North African practice. "We need to know what has happened, and those responsible need to be held to account", Freeland said.

"I emphasised the importance of conducting a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation, and the Saudi leadership pledged to deliver precisely on that", Pompeo said.

The interview was released after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Saudi Arabia's King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about Khashoggi, who was last seen October 2 entering Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul to fill out paperwork for his upcoming marriage to his Turkish fiancee, Hatice Cengiz.

At a news conference, Cavusoglu said Pompeo would be able to bring more information on the issue when he arrives in Turkey after visiting Saudi Arabia.
