Officials say a child is first to die in Florida flu season

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some 80,000 Americans died during the brutal 2017-18 flu season, including 183 children who died from flu or flu-related causes, the highest number since the CDC starting keeping records on nationwide pediatric influenza deaths in 2004.

The department said 125,000 people received the flu shot a year ago through the province's publicly funded vaccination program.

Taiwan normally starts its annual free vaccination program on October 1 in preparation for the flu season, which usually begins in November and peaks around February the following year before slowing down in March.

Flu shots are generally recommended for anyone age 6 months and older. One outbreak was an unspecified strain of influenza and group A streptococcus — also known as strep throat.

The first of a few confirmed cases in the area was reported in the last couple of weeks, but there is no large increase in cases at this time, said Chris Steward of Sedgwick County's Division of Health. That was the most the state had experienced in three years. No other details were released.

The university also issued a statement, saying it "regrets the decision not to allow Lara Alqasem to enter Israel and study for a master's degree in law".

Approximately 80 percent of those who died were not vaccinated.

Vaccination rates dropped previous year, particularly among children, and health officials are urging Americans not to get complacent.

"This year's flu vaccine has been reformulated and updated based on last year's historically bad flu season", Webby said.

There is no evidence to support fears that the vaccine could be harmful.
