Unsigned artists can now upload music directly to Spotify for free

Those distribution platforms have historically charged a one-time upload fee or yearly subscription fee for use of their services, but now Spotify is allowing artists to upload directly free of charge.

The feature, now in beta, will let artists cut out the middleman. At the moment, the feature is an invite-only beta for users of its Spotify For Artists platform. Those services aren't necessarily expensive-DistroKid, for instance, charges $20 per year for unlimited uploads to streaming services and takes no royalty cut-but direct uploads could give artists more control, especially over release timing. The company has already tested the feature with a few hundreds USA -based independent artists - including Noname, Michael Brun, VIAA, and Hot Shade - who gave their feedback, and in the coming weeks they will be inviting more - "make sure to join our mailing list so you'll be the first to know about any new announcements", the company stresses.

"You've told us time and time again that sharing your work with the world should be easier", Spotify said in a blog post addressed to artists.

This is why the specs sheets for the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR weren't really complete even after the phones' unveiling last week. Last year's iPhone X had the same battery design but was split in two while this time around, Apple went for a whole piece.

It's not clear how this move might affect SoundCloud, which has always been the place for unsigned artists to upload music to the internet quickly and easily.

The new initiative is now being tested in an invite-only beta mode, but Spotify said they will "bring upload to even more artists, labels, and teams" in the future. Just like releasing through any other partner, you'll get paid when fans stream your music on Spotify. The company will also send a full report on how much each stream is earning, in addition to any other insights from Spotify for Artists.
