Cubs' Russell placed on leave after domestic violence claims

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell has been placed on leave by Major League Baseball following allegations that he was physically and verbally abusive during his marriage.

Russell has now been placed on administrative leave, the league has announced, due to the severity of the alleged actions.

"Major League Baseball takes all allegations of Domestic Violence seriously".

These allegations date back to mid-June, and the league has been looking into them since that time.

Russell and the Cubs are expected to make a statement regarding Melisa's post before the start of the Crosstown Classic.

"Any allegation I have abused my wife is false and hurtful", said Russell.

His ex-wife Melisa wrote a detailed letter explaining years of abuse from her husband backing up abuse claims made by her friend last year on social media. In an ensuing comment, one of her friends accused Russell of physical abuse as well.

- "The first time I was physically mistreated by my spouse, I was in shock". She accused Russell of physical, emotional and verbal abuse in their relationship, including in front of their young son who's now 3. Why did he get so angry?

So, for all you who can't wait to come to the defense of Addison Russell, because according to you, of course his ex-wife is lying, just wants attention and wants to ruin his career, I mean this in the most polite and respectful way possible, fuck you.

Before Russell returned to the Cubs he spoke with reporters and denied after the allegations. "I was deeply hurt that he could even be capable of this behavior towards me, I couldn't understand how the man I was so in love with, the FATHER of my child, the man I married just a few months ago could show such aggression towards me".

Outside looking in, others may and probably will have a lot of negative things to say for sharing my story but after what I've experienced, I'm not easily intimidated anymore.

"The way I was treated and the way he made me feel about myself, tore me down to nothing".

"Feeling as bad about myself as I already did, on top of finding out about him cheating on me again, put me into a rage to finally just leave, enough is enough, I couldn't [bear] to sit in our "home" any longer and fall deeper and deeper into depression", the post continued.

Russell has struggled at the plate each of the last two seasons.
