The university's Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR) is examining the pharmaceutical-grade medical cannabis product's safety, tolerability and efficacy for essential tremor, a nervous system or neurological disorder that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking.

"The bottom line is we don't know for sure, but the CBD component is based on previous trials, generally well tolerated even at higher doses", he said.

Cannabis has been approved for medical use on a wide variety of conditions in 31 states, but this is the first time scientists have raised the possibility of its effectiveness for calming essential tremor.

Shares of British Columbia-based cannabis producer Tilray Inc. surged almost 30 per cent on Tuesday after the marijuana company received a key approval related to a clinical trial in the United States.

Shares in marijuana company Tilray Inc. went on a wild ride - surging by more than 90 per cent then briefly dropping into negative territory and rebounding - one day after the licensed producer said it got approval to export medical cannabis from Canada to the USA for a clinical trial.

Dr Fatta Nahab, a board-certified neurologist and director of the Functional Imaging of Neurodegenerative Disorders Lab at the UC San Diego Health's Movement Disorder Center, will serve as the principal investigator for the study. Currently, the disorder is treated using drugs originally developed for high blood pressure or seizures.

The news signals yet "another encouraging sign of improved government support for cannabis research", Cowen analyst Vivien Azer writes in a note, and the increased medical applications "add another domino to future legalization in the U.S". "And we commend Tilray for the development of this study drug which has the potential to help thousands of people who struggle with ET".

Ronaldo red card to be reviewed by UEFA next week
Cristiano Ronaldo will learn next week if he is banned from playing at former club Manchester United in the Champions League. Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri led calls for the introduction of VAR in the Champions League after the game.

Paul Armentano, deputy director of the marijuana law reform organization NORML, said that illustrates how badly American researchers need alternative sources for cannabis.

The clinical trial is expected to begin in 2019 and will enroll 16 patients in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, double crossover study.

Tilray received approval to import medical cannabis into the United States for a study in California, the company announced Tuesday.

The University of California San Diego researchers spent years planning and seeking approval for their study from the DEA and the Food and Drug Administration.

Yet marijuana for study is typically only available in dry-bud form or cigarettes, cultivated at the University of MS and provided via the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
