USA climate summit ends with California promising satellite carbon monitoring

On Monday, Brown signed a bill aiming to eliminate fossil fuel use for electricity in the state by 2045, in response to USA withdrawal from the Paris climate accord.

The landmark summit also aimed to put on notice leaders in the public and private sector hedging on climate action, giving them warning that they could face consequences more immediate than a warmer planet some decades from now.

Ghosh said that India must use this opportunity provided by the California summit to "demonstrate its climate actions, by virtue of its power of resistance to inequities in climate politics, its power of example set through domestic policies and actions, and its power of leadership at the worldwide level, such as the global Solar Alliance".

The policies are created to fight air pollution, improve the quality of life for all citizens, and help tackle the global threat of climate change.

The 2015 Paris agreement commits countries to set their own plans for cutting emissions.

Inside the summit, Brown and former New York Mayor Michael Bloombergdetailed goals to reduce emissions by shifting drivers toward electric vehicles and closing coal plants at a more rapid pace.

"I work with some of the communities in Costa Rica where it's very evident and so they are very eager to find solutions", Hite noted.

Bloomberg noted that the US reduced carbon emissions more than any other large nation since 2000, as 27 cities announced they had reached their goals of decreasing their emissions to prevent catastrophic global warming in 2020.

"The West Coast represents the world's fifth largest economy and we are creating a blueprint for other regions", Washington Governor Jay Inslee said. "I think he'll be remembered, on the path he's now?"

"Liar, criminal, fool - take your choice", he added when asked what Trump's environmental legacy would be.

The CEO of Salesforce, one of the world's largest online business software companies, urged fellow technology leaders at the conference to help fight climate change.

Thousands of activists, mainly environmentalists, on Thursday staged a protest here, calling on Governor Brown to end oil drilling and gas production in California.

Salesforce recently opened a 61-story office tower in San Francisco that the company says relies on clean energy to operate.

Police escorted 10 demonstrators from the meeting hall and briefly detained two protesters outside who were cited for misdemeanours and released.

However, "some folks in the USA are not as eager because they don't feel it directly unless they're right next to drought or fire or floods or hurricanes or things like that", the young American scholar expressed her concern. In response, the governor said California has the most integrated and comprehensive oil reduction plan in America.

"You don't snap your fingers and say now it's done", Brown said.

"If Trump turns off the satellites, California will launch its own damn satellite", Brown said at the time to cheers and applause from the geophysicists.

Entertainment and electronics giant Sony Corporation committed this week to running its global operations only with renewable energy, joining more than 140 multinationals - three-quarters of them having pledged to do so before 2030.

The summit came with 2018 on pace to be the fourth hottest year on record globally.
