Syrian regime downs Israeli missiles near Damascus airport

Another video, released by by the Syrian news website Muraselon, supposedly shows an anti-aircraft missile being launched and then exploding mid-air.

AFP's correspondent in Damascus heard a loud blast, followed by several smaller explosions. A SANA reporter meanwhile reported sounds of explosions in the vicinity of the airport.

Israel struck in Syria on Saturday night, targeting an area near the airport in Damascus, Syrian state media reported.

"We don't comment on foreign reports", said the Israeli official, without elaborating.

For years, Israel has been concerned that Iran is using opportunities presented by the Syrian civil war to entrench itself militarily in the country in order to further threaten the Jewish state - alongside the threat already posed by Hezbollah in Lebanon.

In the video, Tomar is seen thrashing the woman when she threatened to file a police complaint against him. A case on charges of rape and causing hurt has been registered at the Uttam Nagar Police station.

"Our air defenses responded to an Israeli missile attack on Damascus worldwide airport and shot down a number of hostile missiles", a military source said, quoted by SANA. The agency gave no immediate report of casualties or damage.

Israel rarely acknowledges attacks inside Syria, but has said it is its policy to employ military action to prevent weapons transfers to its enemies.

This month, Israel acknowledged having carried out more than 200 strikes in war-ravaged Syria over the past 18 months, mainly against Iranian targets.

An Israeli official said earlier this month that the targets were connected to Iran's elite Al-Quds force and included air force components, support infrastructure, and weapons storage and manufacturing facilities.
