"This is an important time in the negotiation and so it was really important for me, for the negotiators to speak directly with the prime minister to brief him on the issues and to have him give us his instructions on where to move going forward", Freeland said.

President Donald Trump told donors at a dinner Wednesday that he wants to rename the North American Free Trade Agreement, better known as NAFTA. Congress has authorized American negotiators under its Trade Promotion Authority to secure a trilateral deal.

"We have seen various deadlines put forward as markers to work for", Trudeau said.

"We'll see if the Americans are ready to come to the table to do a deal".

The United States wants to water down or eliminate NAFTA's Chapter 19, win significant new access to Canada's dairy market and relax foreign-ownership restrictions on Canadian media companies by removing a cultural-exemption clause in the trade pact.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Trump proposed to change NAFTA's name to the "USMC" pact - standing for U.S., Mexico and Canada - at a private Republican fundraiser Wednesday. He reportedly said he was willing to go ahead with a "USM" deal and drop the C if Canada didn't sign on.

It's not clear that September 30 is a hard deadline for Canada because, as trade watchers have noted, the terms of agreement with the Canadian government could be added to the revised NAFTA deal even after legislation was drawn up.

If this time frame holds true, Canada and the USA have roughly until the end of November to reach a deal over these contentious negotiations.

The president has repeatedly threatened to leave Canada out of the final deal and already formally notified Congress about the bilateral agreement with Mexico.

"I expect we'll probably have several more sessions".

Trudeau said he has given little thought to the name of a renewed trade agreement, focused instead of "a broad range of issues" in talks that "will have a direct impact on Canadians' jobs, on our economic growth and our prospects".
