At least 4 dead as Florence downgraded to Tropical Storm

Flash flood warnings are posted across North Carolina and the worst is yet to come.

A mother and baby were killed when a tree fell on a house, according to a tweet from Wilmington police.

Florence may drench the Carolinas with an unthinkable amount of water this weekend: 18 trillion gallons, or enough to fill the Chesapeake Bay.

"This rise in water level can cause extreme flooding in coastal areas particularly when storm surge coincides with normal high tide", the hurricane center said, "resulting in storm tides reaching up to 20 feet or more in some cases".

United States media later said a second man in Lenoir County died after heavy winds knocked him down as he tried to check on his dogs.

"The fact is this storm is deadly and we know we are days away from an ending", Cooper said.

"Florence slowly weakening just inland over eastern SC but causing catastrophic flooding over North and SC", the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said early Saturday morning, after downgrading it from a hurricane to a tropical storm the previous day.

Atlantic Beach on North Carolina's Outer Banks islands had already received 30 inches (76 cm) of rain, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

More than 22,600 people were housed in 150 shelters statewide, including schools, churches and Wake Forest Universitys basketball arena.

New Bern resident Dan Eudy said he and his brother were awakened on Thursday night by the sound of a boat ramming against his front porch.

Trump is expected to travel to the storm-ravaged region "by early to middle of next week, once it is determined his travel will not disrupt any rescue or recovery efforts", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement Friday. By Friday evening, the eye of the storm had moved to SC.
