Pompeo accuses John Kerry of ‘actively undermining’ USA policy on Iran

While Pompeo would not go as far as Trump, he said Kerry's behavior is "beyond inappropriate" and "actively undermining USA policy".

In a Thursday night tweet, Trump took a different view, echoing criticism from conservative pundits from recent days. "You can't find precedent for this in USA history".

Trump also targeted Kerry in May following a Boston Globe report about his meetings with officials involved in the Iran nuclear deal, which he helped craft while secretary of state under President Barack Obama. In return, Iran agreed to restrictions on its nuclear program making it impossible to produce a bomb, along with rigorous inspections.

"Mr. President, you should be more anxious about Paul Manafort meeting with Robert Mueller than me meeting with Iran's FM", Kerry said on Twitter shortly after Pompeo's remarks, referring to Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort who on Friday agreed to cooperate with federal investigators into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election. The two were key players in the 2015 nuclear agreement forged by the USA and Iran. Trump called the get-togethers "illegal meetings" and asked why Kerry had not registered as a foreign agent.

"John Kerry had illegal meetings with the very hostile Iranian Regime, which can only serve to undercut our great work to the detriment of the American people, " Trump tweeted late Thursday. That statute requires those who represent the interests of foreign governments in a "political or quasi-political capacity" to disclose those relationships and details about their activities. "John Kerry can't get over the fact that he had his chance and blew it!" "And I've also seen reports that he is apparently providing, according to reports, advice to the Iranian Government. Stay away from negotiations John, you are hurting your country!"

During interviews to promote his new book, Kerry told an interviewer that he has met with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif three or four times since leaving office and that their talks touched on the global nuclear agreement, to which Iran, the EU, Russia and China still adhere.

Trump withdrew the United States from a nuclear deal with Iran that Kerry negotiated between Iran and six world powers in 2015. One of those meetings took place in Norway and another in Germany. A third is reported to have occurred at the United Nations headquarters, which is not technically on USA soil.

Later Wednesday, during an appearance on Fox News' "The Daily Briefing", Kerry did not deny the suggestion he told Iranians to "wait out" Trump until the next Democratic president.

"What I have done is tried to elicit from him what Iran might be willing to do in order to change the dynamic in the Middle East for the better", he said.
