Hurricane Florence: North Carolina devastated by ‘CATASTROPHIC’ floods

Hurricane Florence hit land Friday morning, just east of Wilmington - pounding the area with life-threatening wind and rain.

Gov. Roy Cooper of the Tar Heel state announced a State of Emergency ahead of the storm making its way to the coast.

With graphics depicting an intersection on a street in the American state of North Carolina, the forecaster explains what is likely to happen as the water engulfs the state's coastline amid sound effects of wind, rain and rushing water.

When all is said and done, Florence could pour 40 inches of rain along some parts of the North Carolina coast, according to CNN.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station say Hurricane Florence is so massive, they had to use a super wide-angle lens to capture photographs of the storm from space.

Hurricane Florence is now located about 15 miles north-northeast of Myrtle Beach, North Carolina. New Bern Police Lt. David Daniels said that between 150 and 200 people were rescued so far, with others still waiting for help.

"WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", New Bern city officials said on Twitter.

Authorities in New Bern said more than 100 people had to be saved from floods and that the downtown area was underwater.

Florence is about 25 miles (45 km) north-east of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour (110 km/h), the Miami-based weather forecaster said.

In Kinston, more than an hour's drive inland from the coast, Lenoir County spokesman Bryan Hanks said a man was electrocuted as he attempted to connect extension cords outside in the rain.

"I about jumped out of my skin", he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Friday morning. It shows the depth of water in a Belhaven family's garage.

Rescue efforts have been widespread across the city and teams are still searching for residents.

Utility companies said millions were expected to lose power and that restoring it could take weeks. "Florence will then move generally northward across the western Carolinas and the central Appalachian Mountains early next week". Significant weakening was expected over the weekend.

Downtown New Bern, on the Neuse River also is flooded.

They even added digital fish and fake cars floating by to showcase the devastation Hurricane Florence has the capacity to leave behind. In the Philippines, evacuations were under way with Super Typhoon Mangkhut expected to hit on Saturday in an area impacting an estimated 5.2 million people.
