Hurricane Florence: Giant, slow-moving storm causes deluge as it makes landfall

No deaths have been reported in New Bern, but the situation caused by Hurricane Florence is dire, the mayor said.

Organizer Clyde Cain, told CNN the Cajun Navy was staged in New Bern and had received more than 500 calls for assistance. "Our greatest concern about this storm remains the same - storm surge and massive flooding", he said.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said the hurricane was "wreaking havoc" on the coast and could wipe out entire communities as it makes its "violent grind across our state for days". To the south, storm surge pushed water levels at Johnny Mercer Pier at Wrightsville Beach, where Florence made landfall at 7:15 a.m. with 90 miles per hour winds, to more than 8.5 feet. Tomorrow, forecasters expect it to climb over nine feet.

Travel on the state's roads has grown "extremely hazardous", said Jim Trogdon, the North Carolina transportation secretary, who warned in a late-morning briefing that a 500- to 1,000-year "flood event is anticipated".

"We are not turning away that help", she said. "We are stuck in the attic". "It's been occurring all night".

Hurricane Florence began lashing the coast Thursday morning, sending pounding waves ashore and rising storm surge.

According to the National Hurricane Centre's 8am AST (1pm BST) advisory: "Florence remains a very large storm, which will produce risky impacts across southeastern North Carolina and northeastern SC for the next couple of days".

The National Hurricane Center says the eyewall of Hurricane Florence is beginning to reach the North Carolina coast.

And cameras aboard the International Space Station managed to catch incredible footage just a few minutes after the storm's landfall.

Will not tolerate any form of foreign meddling in USA elections
One source, a USA official, said the order would slap sanctions on any attempt to interfere in national elections. The order, not yet released, is meant as a deterrent against interference in the 2018 midterm elections.

"In Harvey, vibration from wind caused [one] to register rain", said hydrodynamics branch chief Robert Holmes.

The city warns that people "may need to move up to the second story" but tells them to stay put as "we are coming to get you".

"Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other unsafe conditions", the hurricane center briefing said.

At the Comfort Suites in Wilmington, hotel staff hiding out with news crews and storm refugees were left in the dark when the power went out.

More than 60 people had to be pulled from a collapsing motel at the height of the storm.

The county had been conducting water rescues since Thursday, Parker said. NY emergency workers reported rescuing elderly residents at a New River retirement community. Craven County officials said they responded to 200 calls for help.

The path of Florence will make the risky weather conditions last for days, as it has slowed down upon reaching land.

A forecast by the Weather Channel, presented by meteorologist Erika Navarro, has gone viral after its impressive use of 3D graphics showed just how deadly the potential storm surge of Hurricane Florence can be.

More than 440,000 homes and businesses were without power in North and SC early on Friday, utility officials said.
