Twitter appalled by Erik Karlsson trade

Despite the constant off-season talks of a trade involving Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson, when the moment finally materialized, the man of the hour seemed to be stunned.

The Senators receive center Chris Tierney, defenseman Dylan DeMelo, forward Rudolfs Balcers, forward Josh Norris, a conditional 2019 second-round pick, a conditional 2020 first-round pick.

Dean Brown: "Sens also get a 2nd rd pick in 2021".

In Karlsson, whose 518 points are by far the most of any defenseman since he entered the National Hockey League in 2009, San Jose gets the difference-maker it was hoping for when it pursued Tavares in free agency.

The Sabres conditionally own the Sharks 2019 first round pick.

The Dallas Stars have signed Seguin to an 8-year contract extension through 2026-27 at an AAV of $9.85 million.

Erik Karlsson is on the move.

Dorion said he had been working on this deal for a long time and felt the timing was right.

"This has been in the works for awhile".

Hurricane Florence slightly increases in speed
Governors in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia have declared states of emergency in preparation for Florence. She and her husband would decide Tuesday morning whether to evacuate their family of two kids and a dog, said LaRoche.

"I'm just going to speak from the heart", Karlsson said. "I was not part of that plan and that's why we're standing here today".

Some couldn't believe the return Ottawa received.

"I was prepared to come here and work hard for this team. I still have a year on my deal and, unfortunately, I couldn't follow through".

Karlsson had nine goals and 53 assists last season for Ottawa.

The comparisons to Alfredsson's departure for the Detroit Red Wings as an unrestricted free agent in July 2013 are inevitable because Karlsson has roots in the community. The move comes on the eve of the first on-ice session at Senators training camp.

"I don't think that I could have ever prepared for this", Karlsson said. It's been happening really fast. "I never wanted to leave this place, but at the same time I respect their decision".

The six-foot, 191-pound Swede was selected by the Senators with the 15th overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Karlsson has won two Norris Trophies as the NHL's top defenceman.

The Senators have said they are entering a rebuilding period and are planning to go with a young roster this season.
