The National Hurricane Center in Miami says a life-threatening storm surge is likely along portions of the coastlines of South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia, and interests from South Carolina to the mid-Atlantic states are on alert for damaging winds and exceptionally heavy rainfall and flooding. They are only required to file plans with the Coast Guard if they dock in port.

The ship left NY on Sunday, September 9, heading towards the Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas instead of Bermuda's King's Wharf as planned, reports USA Today.

It is feared the current Category 4 storm could batter North and SC and Virginia with winds of up to 150 miles per hour by the time it reaches land.

Carnival Cruise Line's 2,124-passenger Carnival Pride has also changed destination from Bermuda to the Bahamas after leaving Baltimore.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.'s September 8 sailing of the Grandeur of the Seas was diverted to Florida's Port Canaveral from Bermuda for two days before a scheduled return to Baltimore on Sunday. Carnival Horizon is sailing an eight-day cruise that embarked in New York Sept. 5.

Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Escape was diverted to the Bahamas instead of Bermuda, reported USA Today.

Hurricane Florence also affected the itineraries of Norwegian Cruise Line's Boston-based Norwegian Dawn and two vessels operated by Oceania Cruises.

In a preemptive move, the 2,340-passenger Norwegian Dawn sailed for Canada and New England on Friday instead of Bermuda and is in the midst of unexpected stops in Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia; St. John, New Brunswick; and Bar Harbor, Maine.

Not everyone is happy about the cruise lines' efforts to avoid the storm.
