‘Danger to life is possible’: Alert issued ahead of Storm Helene’s arrival

Helene is a category 1 hurricane and one of four active storms in the Atlantic as the hurricane season reaches its peak.

Florence's arrival has already sparked mass evacuations across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Forecasters at the Met Office have issued severe weather alerts as Hurricane Helene creeps closer to the UK.

Meteorologist Cathal Nolan has said, "having assessed the latest weather models and based on my own numerical calculations it looks increasingly likely that hurricane Helene will make landfall in Ireland at some point between 14:00 on Monday and 02:00 on Tuesday next".

"It is expected to push north-east towards the United Kingdom late Monday, before clearing quickly to the north of Scotland through Tuesday morning".

According to the UK Met Office, Helene is projected to head east towards the south-western corners of the UK.

"Hurricane Joyce is also in the Atlantic so we need to see how those two systems are going to move around each other because that could have an impact".

The winds are expected to batter parts of Northern Ireland on Monday and Tuesday.


"It's possible that the west coast of Wales and Cornwall could get some winds as well, but we will get a clearer picture of what to expect very soon".
