States Prepare for ‘Storm of a Lifetime’ as Hurricane Florence Looms

Trump and officials urged residents in the path of the storm to evacuate before it is too late.

The threat has sparked a rush of evacuation efforts in SC and North Carolina, with more than a million people urged to get out of Florence's way.

More than 10 million people are under a storm watch or warning in Virginia and the Carolinas, where up to 40 inches of rain could fall.

The storm is expected to make landfall early Friday morning near Wilmington, North Carolina.

Hurricane Florence has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm but it is still considered an extremely risky and life-threatening storm.

Almost 2 million residents have been told to evacuate and head to safer ground. "It wants to get stronger", he said of the storm. "It's an extremely risky, life-threatening, historic hurricane".

The Michigan-sized storm is set to linger for days and cause catastrophic flooding with up to four feet of rain and 13-foot storm surges. SC has also canceled classes through at least Saturday due to the storm.

Tropical storm force winds are thought to be just hours away from making landfall in North Carolina.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, concerned the storm would bring devastation south, issued an emergency declaration for all 159 counties in his state. And even that, in an inland area like Raleigh, has been no easy trip. "Even though it's down in South and North Carolina, it is a big storm and the track is ever-changing".

In Virginia, 245,000 coastal residents were ordered to evacuate.
